OCTOBER 14 PTO WEEKLY UPDATE

NEXT PTO MEETING – This Wednesday, October 15, 6 pm- 8 pm, Champlain Elementary (www.champlainpto.org). Come join us for dinner and round table discussions of PTO business past, present and future at this week's PTO MEETING in the Learning Center. NATIONAL LUNCH WEEK -  Did you know you can have lunch with your child at school on any day of the week? And this week, October 13 - 17, is National Lunch Week. On Wednesday, lunch at Champlain will be ALL LOCAL! And a farmer will be present on Wednesday for a taste testing! Click here for more details.

FALL FUN CLEANUP – Our Schoolyard Habitat Work-Day is Saturday, Oct. 18 at 9 am.
- Sunflower Garden: It’s time to put the sunflower garden to bed.  We’ll save some seeds for the birds and cut down and compost the stalks.
- Butterfly Garden:  We’ll plant milkweed for the monarchs, as well as some other nectar plants.
- Tree-moving: Two of the new, small trees are in the path of the sledding hill and need to be relocated.
- Invasive plant removal/trail maintenance:  Help us remove invasive plants from the woods trail.

CUB SCOUT SPACE EXPLORATION AND ROCKET MEETING – Thursday, October 16, 5:30 PM,Champlain Elementary (meetings each 3rd Thursday of the month), each boy will learn about space exploration and build and launch a miniature air-powered (environmentally friendly!) rocket (Cub Scout Events, rbeste@yahoo.com, click here to start building!).

First grade cub scouts will also have the opportunity to visit our very own Vermont Air National Guard (the Green Mountain Boys) on-base (!) for a live flight demonstration, this Friday, 10/17, 6:30 pm (click here for details)

PARENT EVENING - The first parent evening is with pediatrician, Barb Frankowski, Wednesday, November 5 from 6-8 pm. Contact Melissa McConnell (hooona@aol.com ). The discussion will be "The Birds and Bees…and Beyond!"  The focus of the meeting is for parents of 4th/5th grad students but parents of all grade children are welcome to attend.s

SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE
On August 30, the school board passed 2 important resolutions that define the future of our schools. The Board passed a resolution to move forward with 2 magnet schools and a resolution to request the city council to bring a ballot item for voters to consider. The City Council voted against a November ballot consideration for the proposed Bond, but committed to working with the School District to develop a capital plan to repair and upgrade our schools. Upcoming meetings include 1) Architect Colin Lindberg and School Board Commissioners will review the plan and  answers questions, Wednesday Oct 1st 6:30-8pm, Edmunds; and Thursday Oct 9th 6:30-8pm, Burlington High, 2) Ongoing school facilities tours by Burlington School District Facilities Director Chris Giard, throughout the month of October.
